I’ve wanted some fun mats for bit now. I was initially looking at going a custom route because I wanted to get something just ever so less plain black in the car (t here’s a bit of red stitching in the seats so I was thinking of trying to tie that in somehow).

Then I found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and their longgggg list of checkered mats for an assortment of popular tuner cars (yeah, I said tuner like it’s 2002 and we’re rolling in to a NOPI show). So I reached out about doing a colab with Boring.Cars and P2 M was about it. The mats came in yesterday and I’m pretty happy with them!

The checkered pattern isn’t full on black and white, more grayish and black. I’m thinking long term this may look a bit better because it won’t be as blatantly apparent when they’re dirty. They feel to be made quite well; rubber with the old school pointy nibs on the back , correct fittings for the nipples in the floorboard, and proper OEM shape for a full fit in both foot w ells.

I was concerned they might be a bit too ricey, but frankly, I am really a fan. It fits the fun attitude of the Miata, but is a little more pulled back than a straight up checkered flag - which seems to jive well with the feel of the ND.

What do we say oppo, rice or nice?

Rice, lol.  But they’re not ugly or ostentatious, so honestly not bad.  A buddy had a similar set in his BRZ and they wore out super fast, but no idea who the manufacturer was.

Rice, but i t’s my kind of whimsical nonsense rice so I like it. Would be better if the driver’s mat had a heel pad of some sort.

Thanks for sharing. I got all-weather mats, and the OEM mats I put in storage were... Disposed of (still a sore subject). There is currently a single set on eBay for twice as much as these . Nice to have options!

I had the 3dMax or whatever ones that I quite liked, but they’re not a year round mat for me. Good for the winter when the weather will be bad for a bit, but I like the carpeted style otherwise. These feel well made, but time will tell

I wouldn’t put them in my car, but I don’t dislike them. I think the more subtle gray is what makes it work. W hite on black would’ve been a bit too much for me.

They look quite nice but not something I would do. More than rice these bring to mind the Japanese aftermarket floormats that had similar pattern and seem to have been popular at least in the past there.

Nice, they’re old-school in a way and I know those kinds of mats were easily available in Japan, if not part of certain trims or packages. I ended up buying a set of Zeromotive mats through Rev9 because I needed blue and black mats to match my 10AE-swapped interior.

I love the look but not the price. I did a budget version with some rubber backed carpet mats in my Galant. I paid like 6 bucks for the mats, and 10 bucks for a rivet gun, and some aluminum that I used to make the hold down brackets.

Yikes, I for one wouldn't go around advertising it is an automatic. ND is a sweet car though, I have been giving some serious thought to picking one up. Used to love my NA.

It seems like it might be an interesting project. You could buy any brand of black mats and create any pattern you want by painting them yourself.

I wonder if they are using a spray-based printer of some sort to paint the mats. I remember seeing a prototype CNC airbrush many years ago. The demo had a vertical chassis painting a scene on a set of mini blinds.

I’ve used a fabric paint in the past to try to change the color of some floormats (beige to black) and had very meh results. I suspect fabric dye would be better.

As for these being painted, I am unsure on the answer to that. The black is raised a little more than the white, but I don’t know the construction behind the pattern.

In your closeup shot, it looks like the white isn’t full-depth. I’d bet it’s paint. I just wonder what kind and how it was applied. I thought they might apply the paint on-site after the mats were made , but the way the edge binding cuts off the pattern, now I think they either buy the material pre-painted, or they paint the pattern on-site before the mats are cut.
